The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) now has the powers to make a complaint in court against service providers for violating rules under the TRAI Act of 1997.
It can also make recommendations to the DoT (Deptartment of Telecom) to revoke licences of service providers for non compliance of the terms and conditions of the licence.
Till date, TRAI imposed financial disincentive on eight service providers Vodafone, Reliance, Bharti, Tata, Spice, BPL, MTNL and Aircel for noncompliance under Telecom Unsolicited Commercial Communications Regulation 2007.
TRAI has submitted a proposal seeking more powers. The government has so far not taken any final decision in this regard.
This announcement was made by the Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Sachin Pilot, in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
