MTNL expects Rs 280 cr through 3G roaming agreement

MTNL expects revenue of about Rs 280 crore annually from roaming agreements with other operators for 3G spectrum sharing.
Kuldeep Singh, chief managing director, MTNL, told reporters at the sidelines of the Global Telecom Summit, organised my Assocham, “We are expecting about Rs 280 crore in revenue through 3G roaming agreements with other operators.”

Operators that couldn’t get 3G spectrum in Delhi and Mumbai were earlier invited by MTNL to bid for sharing MTNL’s network to offer their 3G subscribers roaming facilities.
"We are looking at a huge business opportunity in this and have invited bids from two operators each in Delhi and Mumbai," Singh said.
Airtel, Vodafone and Reliance Communications were the only operators who succeeded in getting 3G spectrum in Delhi and Mumbai, in the auction held in May. On the other hand, both public sector units (PSUs) MTNL and BSNL were given 3G spectrum nearly a year ahead of others.
The tie up will be for one-way roaming as MTNL already has an exclusive roaming agreement with BSNL throughout the country and will not need to depend on any other operator.
MTNL will charge a minimum of Rs 70 crore per operator per metro. Of this, Rs 50 crore will be a fixed fee charged annually, and Rs 20 crore will be for using the network, for which the operator will be offered a discount.
The company also plans to monetise its real estate assets and expects an additional gain of Rs 40 to 50 crore from them.
Singh added, "We have already started leasing out parts of a property in Mumbai and will give out more space from other offices. This should bring in about Rs 40 to 50 crore annually to the company."
