Technologies that will transform mobile experience in 2011

2010 become the year of smartphones, tablets and new operating systems like Android, Bada and Symbian. 2011 is all set to be about further hardware improvements and introduction of new services through mobile devices. Here is a look at some of the hot technologies that will mature in the New Year.

Dual Core processors
Intel, Samsung, AMD, ARM, Qualcomm and NVidia all have announced dual core processors for the mobile phones and tablets. These processors will have speeds rivaling the larger PC processors.
These processors will enable mobile devices to perform tasks that have been the domain of laptops and Desktops. Recently Texas instruments announced a dual core processor with 1.5 GHz speed and the ability to support HD video and two 12 mega pixel cameras.
3D
Spice has already launched a mobile phone with 3D capability. LG is also looking at launching a new 3D capable phone at CES (Consumer electronics Show).
3D capability will mean better viewing, the new innovations in the field enable 3D viewing without the need of glasses. These capabilities will be better harnessed with the new high powered mobile processors.
Mobile TV
2011 will see a new level of convergence with TVs becoming internet access device and mobile devices becoming TV. Mobility is the name of the game in the New Year and more and more tasks will be performed in a truly mobile fashion.
Thanks to the new hardware capability and high-speed access technologies like 3G and LTE mobile will become the device of choice for delivering content. Video in general and TV in particular will be the new revenue source for Operators and entertainment medium for the consumers.
Mobile Commerce
Although there are services already existing in the market that enables banking and transactions through mobile phones, the new year will bring more advanced technologies in the space, which will make mobile commerce more secure and user friendly.
The space is expected to be driven by the developing countries where traditional banking facilities have not reached a vast majority. Mobile will be the medium for the banks to reach the unbanked.
New technologies like NFC (Near Field Communication), which will enable mobile phones to have better security software running on it are also expected to give boost to mobile commerce.
The first launch of this technology is expected from Airtel which is working on launching a new mobile commerce services. It already has mCheck service, which enables it's users to pay utility bills. The new service is expected to wider the ambit of payments, we do not have details about the service however we will keep you posted about the developments.
Near Field Communication (NFC)
It has been much talked about technology in the last few years. But apart from Japan it did not really become big anywhere else.
However this year, all that is set to change. The technology, which enables mobile phones to make credit card type payments, become access cards, metro card etc, has matured and is likely to become available to mobile users. City bank has already done a trial in Bangalore and has reportedly been a good success.
We are hoping that by the end of 2011 we will be able to travel in different metro traimns across India without the need to carry a token, or make payments without the need to carry a credit card.
Green Screen
Qualcomm's Mirasol and Samsungs Super Amoled will enable phones to have better battery life. Mirasol mimics the way butterfly wings display colour. These screens will not need to be backlit as they will use reflection of the ambient light to form pictures and colour. This has dual benefit, better viewing in direct sunlight, and lower battery consumption.
Samsungs new Super Amoled also is an energy efficient technology which enables better pictures than their already brilliant IPS technology. This new technology will also help in lower the price of phones as it will be cheaper to produce these screens.
