BSNL is banking on broadband and value added services to bail it out of losses.
Speaking to Telecom Yatra, Narendra K Yadav, principal general manager, VAS, BSNL, said, “Only broadband and VAS can bail BSNL out of losses. There is nothing else that can save the company.”
He further said that BSNL’s VAS department is not facing any issues related to the telco’s ongoing financial problems, and that its VAS revenue this year is more than what it was last year.
Declining to reveal numbers, Yadav added, “The increase is not too much, it was about 5 per cent, but this is also good considering overall revenues are declining.”
Last year, the company earned revenue of over Rs 2,000 crore from mobile VAS, which constitutes about 20 per cent of the total. Yadav said, “We are hoping to have over Rs 3,000 crore revenue from VAS this financial year. Out of this, 3G services should contribute over Rs 200 crore.”
He added, “We hope to achieve this target from uptake of our 3G services and increase in subscriber base, and we are putting more and more services, particularly videos, and clubbing videos with other services, for example text with videos.”
Service wise, BSNL earned maximum revenue from ring back tones last year, apart from other such IVR and STK based services. Yadav is expecting more revenue from 3G services this year. Last year, 3G services contributed over Rs 1 crore to BSNL’s revenue.
“We are expecting a big jump in our data usage also. Last year it was over Rs 200 crore and this year we are expecting over Rs 400 crore from data,” said Yadav.
