New guidelines on video calling soon

The government on Wednesday said it will soon issue guidelines to address security concerns regarding 3G video calls. The new norms will be included in the guidelines for the next generation of mobile services.

"3G issue is almost resolved; soon you will have new guidelines," Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal said in New Delhi.
The comment comes in one day after Home Minister P Chidambaram had said that telecom service providers need to work out the modalities to provide interception facilities to security agencies, and only after that can 3G mobile services be rolled out.
The Department of Telecom earlier issued notices to RCom, TTSL and Airtel asking them to stop 3G services, which includes video calling. It also asked them to put a hold on new services till they adhered to security norms for legal interception.
The problem is that 3G video calls cannot be intercepted on a real time basis and the contents of these calls are displayed only five minutes after the call is complete.
