Samsung launches mobile PC tablet

Samsung has launched a tablet with sliding keyboard called Sliding PC 7 at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Sliding PC 7 runs on Microsoft Windows 7 operating system and is powered by Intel's Atom processor which delivers 1.66 GHz speed and is code-named Oak Trail.
The device weighs 2.2 pounds and has a full, 80/81-key keyboard sleekly tucked away under the screen, which is revealed when the screen is slid up. The display, which uses a built in accelerometer to maintain orientation, is a multitouch 10.1 inch HD LCD screen that supports a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels and produces brightness of 340 nit. PC 7 also features Eco Light Sensor technology, which conserves energy and adjusts screen brightness based on ambient light. The six-cell lithium-polymer battery is said to support the 7 Series for up to 9 hours.
Samsung is positioning the PC 7 as a mix of tablet and laptop. "With the proliferation of tablet devices, there is a demand from consumers who want the elegance, ease-of-use and portable form factor of a tablet, but also the familiarity of a notebook," said Scott Ledterman, director of mobile PC product marketing at Samsung's enterprise business division.
Sliding PC 7 will be available in either 32GB or 64GB models with a solid-state hard drive; it also features expandable storage with the 4-in-1 memory card reader.
Samsung claims that its fast start feature powers the PC 7 in as little time as 15 seconds, or restores it from hibernation or sleep modes in merely 3 seconds. Sliding PC 7's solid state drive also supports multi-tasking.
The tablet comes with an HDMI port for sharing content on an HDTV; and built in webcam and speaker for video communication. It also offers optional 3G, Wifi and WiMax connectivity.
Sliding PC 7 comes with several pre-loaded applications that are optimised for the touch screen display. This includes Samsung's applications for music, video, photos, note taking, weather, clock, compass and bing maps etc. More touch applications will be available via the Samsung App Manager and Windows Product Scout.
PC 7 also features Samsung AllShare, which enables users to control, search, swap and play videos, photos, and music across a range of DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) certified Samsung devices, including cameras, smartphones, TVs and PCs.
Samsung 7 is scheduled to be available in March this year starting at about $700 (Rs 31,650).
